BookCycle
BSc Project 2012
Introduction
BookCycle is a self-service book recycling station. The aim was to promote book returns across university campuses.
The design makes book returns quick and easy by eliminating any need for face-to-face interactions during the process.
BookCycle was the result of an undergraduate project at Cardiff Metropolitan University’s Cardiff School of Art and Design (CSAD).
interface
A major element of the Bookcycle design was the user interaction. The touchscreen device involved UI and UX design to ensure ease of use and improve functionality.
The interface was mapped out and developed using power-point with graphics overlay-ed with hyperlink buttons.
This method allowed for a fluent real-time experience and was used in testing trials on a tablet embedded into a facsimile model.
Construction
This project required particular attention to manufacturing and sustainability.
The design relies heavily on sustainably sourced birch ply and aluminium panels.
Flatpack and ease of disassembly are integral to the design of the product. These factors ensure the environmental impact of the product life cycle would remain low from manufacture to shipping to end of life recycling.
